Shippers Warehouse Leads Successful Fight to Pass UCC Art. 7 in Georgia
June 2010

Led by Georgia Vice-President and General Manager Bill Stankiewicz, Shippers Warehouse of Georgia was instrumental in the recent passage by Georgia of the amended Article 7 of the Universal Commercial Code.

First introduced on February 18, 2009, Georgia HB 451 won unanimous approval in the Georgia House on March 12, and the Senate Judiciary Committee recommended passage on March 26. Further meetings by Shippers Warehouse G.M. Bill Stankiewicz with legislators & support from business groups such as IWLA, WERC, CSCMP, Southeastern Warehouse Association, & others helped to finally achieve success with the bill being signed into law by the Georgia Governor on May 27, 2010.

Article 7 helps to solve many of the emerging issues in the new age of electronic rights and title transfer by incorporating consistent provisions for electronic documents of title. It allows a warehousemen or common carrier on one side of the country to know what his expectation will be on the other side of the country. It incorporates time honored means of negotiability with updates for the new means and methods for negotiability and transfer of electronic documents of title allowing for “interchangeability.”

As of March 1, 2010, Revised UCC Article 7 was in effect in thirty-six states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia.

“What's the business climate in Georgia?”

ASK Mentor Bill Stankiewicz from Fayetteville, Georgia reports: "Georgia and Atlanta are beginning to emerge from the deep recession that has plagued the nation and region for the past two years. Corporate relocation announcements have picked up, home sales are firming and several major companies have been able to tap the credit markets in recent weeks, allowing them to shore up the balance sheets and stabilize their operations. Most important of all, the state's core competitive advantages remain intact. Georgia and Atlanta offer a compelling value for businesses looking to operate in the heart of the nation's fastest growing region, with good schools and an unparalleled transportation network. Recent notable arrivals include NCR Corporation, which is relocating its corporate headquarters from Dayton, Ohio, to Duluth and First Data Corporation, which is relocating from Denver to the Sandy Springs area. Another notable addition is a new Kia plant in West Point. In addition to production workers, Kia is hiring salaried professionals in accounting, HR, IT, legal, and administration." Bill is the VP and General Manager of Shippers Warehouse of Georgia and also sits on the Board of Directors of Southeastern Warehouse Assoc. He can offer a wealth of information in the warehousing and logistics industry, as well as the Georgia business climate for any of your mentees interested in these areas.

Shippers Warehouse Named One of Top 70 3PLs by Food Logistics
December 2009

Food Logistics, the only publication exclusively dedicated to covering the movement of product through the food supply chain, this week announced the fourth-annual listing of the Top 70 3PLs in its July/August 2009 issue.

Three years ago, Food Logistics announced its first “50” list of third-party logistics providers that were helping food companies optimize their warehousing and transportation operations. This year, the magazine added 20 new 3PLs to the list. These 3PLs offer a broad scope of services and capabilities that enable food companies to reduce costs, increase flexibility and improve service levels.

"Food and beverage companies and their third-party logistics (3PL) counterparts are discovering win-win successes being felt throughout the supply chain - right into the back offices of financials, sales, marketing and IT," explained Katherine Doherty, editor-in-chief of Food Logistics magazine.

"Selecting the right 3PL is vital to the success of a company's overall operations—it’s a long-term commitment," said Doherty. "Companies need to have an organized process for selecting and working with a potential 3PL as well as a list of appropriate candidates. We’ve created this listing to help our readers find and evaluate 3PL partners that can help them achieve their goals."
